The Sign of Power

A long, long time ago, Greece, Persia, and Italy were all part of one big piece of land. You could walk from one country to another without ever getting your toes wet!

But the Emperor of Rome, Nero, didn’t like that at all.

“I want some privacy!” he said, as he stomped his royal foot. “Italy needs to stand out!”

So, Nero called his best builder, a clever man named Carlo, and gave him a big job:

“Carve around Italy to show the world the power of Rome,” Nero said. “And make it look like a boot—because a boot means strength!”

Now, Queen Sophia—the kindest and most beautiful queen in all of Rome—didn’t like wars or showing off power. She secretly sent a message to Carlo:

“Please, dear Carlo, don’t make the boot too harsh. Make it beautiful.”

Carlo loved Queen Sophia. But he had promised Nero he would make a strong boot. So he had an idea…

He followed Nero’s command—but with a twist. He carved Italy into the shape of Sophia’s own boot—a graceful one, with silk ribbons and lace, just like the ones made in Milan and Florence.

When it was done, Carlo said, “The boot is carved, my Caesar. Italy’s power will be known everywhere.”

Nero was thrilled. He never flew over Italy (there were no airplanes yet!), so he never saw the boot from the sky. But he believed Carlo anyway.

And that’s why, to this day, Italy looks like a fancy boot—Queen Sophia’s boot, filled with beauty and charm.
