Fire Under the Sea

Dedication

This book is dedicated to a brave family of seahorses in Florida. Their names are made up in this story to protect their identity.

Also, we did not mention the full name of their Octopus friend from South America for the politics being the way it is. The family always called him Caballero.

They all wanted this book to be dedicated to those seahorses and kids who don’t give in to bullies.

Chapter One: GARY THE GROUPER

Zaros, the rusty seahorse, felt uneasy. It was only a game of hide and go-seek, but it wasn’t fun. Zaros could never find his little sister, Magi, because she sometimes just disappeared like magic. There were no other seahorses around. “Magi! Magi!” he shouted. “It’s time for us to get back home.”

But Magi was nowhere in sight.

“Magi Tess Chumskie!” Zaros went on nervously. “I can’t seeeeee you!”

Suddenly, Magi appeared and jumped Zaros’s back. “Why are you shouting?” Magi asked.

Zaros was relieved. “You scared me! You disappeared as if by magic.”

They laughed and held tails and began toward home.

“I hope the others are not worrying about us back at home,” said Zaros. “We may have a little surprise tonight.”

“Oh, I love surprises! Let’s go.”

As Magi rode on her brother’s back, she tried hard to guess what the surprise might be.

“Is it Nadilum’s birthday? Oh… no… I didn’t get anything for him!”

Zaros, laughed: “No, you have 19 more questions.”

Just then, they were surrounded by a thick black-and-yellow cloud.

“It’s the poison!” Magi cried out loudly. “Hurry, Zaros!”

Zaros and Magi rushed away from the dark-yellow goo leaking out from a tanker.

“Help!” Zaros cried, diving deeper. Even him, Zaros, the strongest seahorse, was crying for help.

And he wasn’t alone! Magi saw even larger fish hurrying away too. Lumpfish and garfish—they all looked scared. The big and small, the tall and the short, the reds and the blues, the skinny and the chubby: nobody was safe from man’s pollution.
